How marketplace commissions and fees affect your profitability

Online marketplaces like eBay, Etsy, Amazon Marketplace, and others provide sellers with access to large, established customer bases in exchange for fees that can significantly compress margins if not carefully understood and factored into pricing. The fee structure on most marketplaces is multi-layered: a percentage commission on each sale, a per-listing fee, a payment processing fee, and in some cases additional fees for promoted listings, fulfilment services, or subscription seller accounts. The cumulative effect of these fees on net revenue is often larger than sellers initially realise.

On eBay, the final value fee for most product categories is approximately 13.25 percent of the sale price, plus a $0.30 per-order charge. On Etsy, sellers pay a 6.5 percent transaction fee on the sale price plus shipping charged to the buyer, a $0.20 listing fee per item, and a 3 percent plus $0.25 payment processing fee. For a $50 sale on Etsy, the total fees would be approximately $3.25 (6.5 percent) plus $0.20 plus $1.75 (3.5 percent plus $0.25), totalling $5.20, or 10.4 percent of the sale price. If the cost of the item is $25, the gross margin before fees is 50 percent, but after fees it falls to approximately 39.6 percent. Sellers who price to a 50 percent margin without accounting for fees are systematically underpricing and eroding their economics with each sale.

Amazon's fee structure is even more complex. Referral fees (Amazon's term for commissions) range from 6 to 45 percent depending on product category, with most categories in the 8 to 15 percent range. If you use Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA), there are additional per-unit pick and pack fees, weight-based shipping fees, and monthly storage fees. Amazon Seller accounts cost $39.99 per month for Professional accounts. FBA fees for a standard-size item might add $3 to $6 per unit on top of the referral fee, which means total Amazon fees on a $30 product could easily reach $8 to $10, an effective rate of 27 to 33 percent before the cost of the product is considered.

Comparing marketplaces on total cost

The right marketplace depends on the product category, target customer, and fee structure relative to expected selling prices. High-value items with large average transaction sizes benefit more from percentage-based fee reductions and may find Amazon's broad reach worth the higher fees. Lower-priced handmade or vintage items may fit Etsy's lower commission better. For used and refurbished goods, eBay's large second-hand buyer base and relatively straightforward fee structure may be optimal. The key metric for comparison is not the headline commission rate but the total effective fee percentage at your specific average order value and product category, which is what this calculator provides.

Marketplace fees and minimum viable selling price

Knowing your total marketplace fee rate allows you to calculate the minimum selling price required to achieve a target gross margin. If your product costs $12 to make and ship, and total marketplace fees are 15 percent of the selling price, and you want a 40 percent gross margin on the selling price, the algebra requires a minimum selling price of $12 divided by (1 minus 0.15 minus 0.40), which equals $12 divided by 0.45, or $26.67. Any selling price below this produces a margin below target after fees and COGS. Running this calculation for each marketplace you sell on reveals whether your current prices are sustainable and what price floor you need to maintain to achieve your margin goals.
