Letter Grade Converter
Convert a score to a letter grade
Enter either a percentage score or points earned out of total points. This tool converts it to a letter grade using a standard A–F scale with plus/minus.
Letter grade converter for exam and test scores (A+ to F)
If you have a score and you want the letter grade quickly, this letter grade converter is built for that single job: turn a percentage or points score into a standard A–F letter grade with plus and minus. This is useful when a teacher shares raw points, when you only know your percent score, or when you want a clear label for how you performed without doing extra math.
The calculator supports two common inputs. If your result is already a percentage, choose Percentage and enter a value from 0 to 100. If you have points, choose Points and enter points earned and total points possible. The calculator will compute the percentage and then convert it into a letter grade. Results are shown in plain language so you can interpret them immediately.
Along with the letter grade, you also get a small extra insight that helps decision making: how far you are from the next grade boundary. In percentage mode, that means the number of percentage points needed to reach the next grade up. In points mode, the calculator shows the minimum additional points you would have needed (based on the same total points) to reach the next boundary. This keeps the tool practical without turning it into a full grade planning system.
Assumptions and how to use this calculator
- The converter uses a common U.S. style A–F scale with plus and minus (A+, A, A-, …, D-, F).
- Scores are treated as percentage of total, with no weighting, curves, or extra credit included.
- Percent values must be between 0 and 100. Points earned must be 0 or higher and cannot exceed total points.
- Grade boundaries are applied to the calculated percentage, and values at a boundary count toward the higher grade (for example, 90.00% is an A-).
- This calculator is for converting a single score, not for combining multiple assignments or computing a final course grade.
Common questions
What grading scale does this letter grade converter use?
It uses a standard plus/minus A–F scale: A+ (97–100), A (93–96.99), A- (90–92.99), B+ (87–89.99), B (83–86.99), B- (80–82.99), C+ (77–79.99), C (73–76.99), C- (70–72.99), D+ (67–69.99), D (63–66.99), D- (60–62.99), and F (below 60).
My school uses a different scale. Will this still match?
Not always. Many schools use variations such as no A+ grade, different cutoffs, or different pass thresholds. This tool is meant for the common A–F plus/minus scale. If your institution publishes its own table, that table is the authority and may produce different letters.
Can I enter points like 17.5 out of 20?
Yes. Points can be whole numbers or decimals. The calculator converts points earned divided by total points into a percentage, then maps that percentage to the letter grade.
Why does it show “points needed to reach the next grade” in points mode?
It answers a practical question: how close you were to the next grade boundary. The calculator finds the next higher cutoff percentage and converts that cutoff back into points using your total points. If you already have the top grade, it will tell you there is no higher grade above it.
Does this include grade curves, weighting, or extra credit?
No. Curves and weights vary widely by teacher and institution. This tool converts the raw score you enter into a letter grade on the stated scale. If your final grade includes curves, category weights, or extra credit, you should apply those rules first and then convert the final percentage.
