Split Bill Calculator

Split a shared bill fairly

Use this Split Bill Calculator to divide shared costs fairly

This Split Bill Calculator helps you work out exactly how much each person should pay when you share a bill. Enter the total amount, add an optional tip, choose how many people are paying, and see a clear breakdown of the split.

It is useful for restaurant visits, shared groceries, group gifts, or any situation where several people are contributing to the same expense. The calculator shows the total with tip, the overall tip amount, and how much each person owes.

You can also choose to round up each person amount to the nearest whole unit. This makes it easier to pay in cash or keep the amounts simple when people are doing quick transfers on their phones.

Assumptions and how to use this calculator

  • The total bill amount is the full amount that needs to be paid, before tip.
  • The tip percentage is applied to the total bill amount and added before splitting between people.
  • All people are assumed to pay the same amount. The calculator does not handle different people paying different shares.
  • Rounding up each person amount only affects the per person figure. The rounded total may be slightly higher than the original bill plus tip.
  • Values are treated as standard currency amounts. The calculator does not handle multiple currencies at once.

To use this tool, enter the total bill, optionally add a tip percentage, fill in how many people are paying, and press the Calculate button. Review the summary, agree on the numbers with your group, and then make payments accordingly.

Common questions

Do I have to add a tip to use this calculator?

No. If you leave the tip percentage empty or set it to zero, the calculator will simply divide the bill amount by the number of people.

What happens if the number of people is not a whole number?

The number of people should be a whole number and at least 1. If you enter a decimal or an invalid value, the calculator will show an error message and will not perform the calculation.

Why are the amounts slightly different from what I calculated by hand?

The calculator rounds values to two decimal places for clarity and uses standard rounding rules. Small differences can appear when rounding intermediate steps, but they should be minor.

What does the rounding option change?

When rounding is turned on, the per person amount is rounded up to the nearest whole unit. This is useful when people are paying in cash or want simple whole-number amounts, even if the total becomes slightly higher.

Can I use this for recurring shared expenses?

Yes. For recurring costs such as shared subscriptions, shared rent portions, or group purchases, you can enter the monthly total and use the calculator to see how much each person should contribute on a regular basis.
